Always trim to about 5mm before lighting — it prevents smoking and helps the scent carry evenly through the room.
Let the wax pool reach the edges of the jar on the first burn, usually 2-3 hours. This sets an even burn for the candle's whole life.
Use a snuffer or dip the wick into the wax pool and straighten it, rather than blowing — this avoids spatter and keeps the wick ready for next time.
